French Press Brewing Guide

With immersion brewing, coffee and water steep together in the same container for a given time before the coffee is filtered out. This gives you an incredibly high degree of control over the brewing – and thus also the taste in the cup.

At Krabatkaffe, we recommend starting with a ratio of approximately 65 g of coffee per liter of water. This results in a full-bodied and well-balanced cup that highlights the coffee's natural character.

You can adjust the brewing depending on the taste profile you are looking for:

  • Coarser grind + longer brewing time (approx. 8 minutes) → a more rounded and mellow cup
  • Finer grind + shorter brewing time → a more intense and complex flavor

Immersion is a flexible brewing method with plenty of room for experimentation. Here, you can really experiment and find exactly the profile that suits your taste – whether you want to emphasize sweetness, acidity, or depth.

Method

1. Preheat your French press with hot water. Press the filter down a couple of times to clean it.

2. Grind your coffee slightly coarser than you would for an Aeropress, medium coarse.

3. Empty the pot of water and add the coffee.

4. Place the pot on your scale, zero the scale, and start your timer. Begin pouring water over the coffee, and once all the water is added, place the filter in the pot.

5. Approximately 30 seconds should have passed by now; let the pot sit for another 3:30 minutes before doing anything else.

6. After 4 minutes, break the coffee crust with a spoon, stirring 6 times.

7. After 8 minutes, slowly press the plunger/filter all the way down.
